Chapter One :

Meet Lavender /

I live in a huge, old Victorian house outside of a small town in Idaho. A lot of other kids have told me that my home is ugly and creepy, and I say otherwise. It's a two story house, containing 3 bedrooms, the living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a mostly empty basement. None of the latter is what makes me love my house.

It's the beautiful fragrant dark brown pine wood that makes up the walls, the gray cold stone floor in the basement, the smooth oak wood flooring on the top two levels, the sharply shaped triangular roofs, the wraparound porch with chairs and potted plants that flower and vine around the railings, and lastly, the big clear glass windows that let me see the outside world. But that's just why I love my HOUSE.

The absolute best part is the seemingly endless forest in my backyard. Ever since I could walk and talk and comprehend things, I was in that forest - walking, running, adventuring, exploring, looking up at the clouds, stargazing, climbing trees, basically doing everything. There's deeply wooded areas, small clearings, tall dry grass and short green grass, brambles and bushes, old logs and huge fallen trees, big rocks and small stones, creeks, trees of all kinds - pine, fir, chokecherry, aspen, maple, lilac, elm, spruce... The list is almost endless. during each season, the smells in the forest change. In the spring, I love picking the lilac blossoms. In the summer, I gather Lewis' mock orange flowers for my mother.

I have no words to describe how at peace and happy I feel while in these woods.

While I'm not in the forest, I'm spending time with my parents, who are pretty much my only friends at this point, because the kids at school call me "albino," which is stupid because my eyes aren't red. They also say I'm adopted, which I'm not even though I actually don't look anything much like either of my parents.

My father's name is Silas, and he has brownish-blonde hair, hazel eyes, olive skin, a few scattered freckles on his face and shoulders, and broad facial features.

My mother's name is Lilith, and she has long dark brown hair, tanned skin, big brown doe eyes, and very defined facial features.

I'm Lavender, and everything about me is pale - I have such light blonde hair its almost white ( same with my eyelashes and thin eyebrows ), silver-ish purple eyes ( hence my name ), and pinkish-brown freckles on nearly every inch of my body. All my facial features are tiny and sharp, as if they were carved with an X-acto knife.

Something that should be a physical feature of mine is my silver Amethyst pendant necklace that my mother bought me for my 9th birthday.

My absolute favorite story is of my mother and father's wedding. It goes something like this:

My father was a geographer, and traveled the world for his studies. While he was in Kuwait, he met my mother, and it was "love at first sight." About 4 months after they met, he proposed to her, and she said yes. They had the wedding on Egaila Beach, in the evening. They weren't very rich people, so they had to have a small, simple wedding. This wasn't a problem because they had no friends or acquaintances to invite, and both their families didn't approve. my mother was sad that there wasn't going to be anyone to see the most special day of her life, and so was my father, but they were both happy for each other and were a bit more comfortable since there wasn't going to be a crowd. After the pastor read them their vows and said a few meaningful words, he left, and so it was just my mother and father on the beach. The sun was setting in beautiful colors of pink, orange, gold, and blue. They walked barefoot down the shore as the salty blueish green waves splashed, and they spent their honeymoon at a nearby hotel.

If I ask my mother, she said that my father had never looked so nervous; it wasn't a usual expression on his handsome face.

If I ask my father, he'll tell me that my mother looked absolutely gorgeous, in her peach colored sundress with a bouquet of purple hydrangeas (purple for passion), her makeup-less face and her long hair blowing in the breeze. He'll also say that she looked very nervous.

They've told me that apart from their wedding day, their favorite day was when I was born.

I was born in a hospital in a big city in Colorado on February 21st. When I turned 4, we moved to Idaho. My father still had a love for the world and for traveling, so we'd fly to places like Canada, Greenland, Brazil, China, and Germany.

I've had a pretty average childhood, my parents would have homeschooled me but they both have jobs during school hours. My mother works at a convenience store in town, and my father works an office job I don't know much about. They're finished working when I get done with school, and they take the weekends off. At the public school, I am often the subject of other kids' bullying, but I don't take it personal and I don't really care because their rude remarks don't make sense and since my parents have told me that I'm perfect. I'm 12 and in 8th grade, and I usually bring home B+ graded papers. I get along very well with all my teachers.

After school hours and on the weekends, if I'm not playing in the forest, I'm doing things with my parents - puzzles, reading books, board games, going on trips to cities around where we live. We do have a television and computer, and my parents have cell phones, but none of us spend much time on our devices. My parents have came with me to explore in the forest a few times before, but its apparently not their favorite activity. And for some reason they don't worry about me being lost in there, or anywhere for that instance - they let me go into town by myself, too.

I do spend quite a bit of time in my room, which is full of cutesy things - I have a collection of fluffy stuffed animals ( I'm also bullied for being "kid-ish" ), a huge pastel teal colored rug, two pink beanbag chairs, buttercream curtains over my window, shelves full of books and puzzles, a desk and chair, and my bed has light orange sheets and pillows. My favorite spot in my room is sitting in the windowsill, or my closet which only possesses pastel colored clothes - everything I own is pastel, actually.

  1. AvaLynne, this story is so good. I feel like I am right there experiencing your story. It's like you take the reader into her world. I feel like I am viewing Lavendar, her family, the forest with the deer, and all that she experiences. Your writing is so very descriptive and paints a picture that can be seen with the mind, heard with the ears, smell with the nose, taste with the mouth engaging all of the senses, which is what makes a good story. Reading this story makes me want to read more. I am excited for reading more as I see how this story unfolds. I clicked on the Notify Me box so that I will be sure to get more chapters as you write!

Chapter Thirty Three  :   Betrayal  /  My breathing was slow and delayed; I was underwater, sucking gallons and gallons of water into my lungs. " Lavender, " Came my mother's gentle voice, comforting like a pillow.  " Lavender, " Was my father's voice, strong and reassuring like an oak tree.  " Lavender. " Orpheus's soft voice, waking me up. I opened my eyes, everything was blurry for a few seconds. I wasn't underwater, but laying sideways on the concrete in the town. Ropes bound my hands and feet. Orpheus was chained to the ground beside me, twitching nervously. I couldn't stand looking into his sorrowful gleaming blue eyes anymore, so I turned my face skywards.  The enormous carmine moon shone down upon everything, casting a bloody glow on it all. Most of the dark clouds had cleared by now, and countless planets and stars of every hue were visible in the sky.  Glancing around, the city seemed dead. The strange, gorgeous plants withere...

I feel like a few books I've previously read encouraged my writing experience and process. Art from paintings and digital games sparked some inspiration.  A thanks to my family, because they encouraged me to write this. This novel was started for a writing project in my school. I took it a lot farther than that, obviously. I've never been a basic person.  As for chapter eleven, I'm happy to give credit to some random cow on a bridge on a trail that I hate. The trail, not the cow. My imagination did the rest. Pushing through writer's block has taught me a lot about my own life. I have to do things I don't want to, if I want a good outcome from the bad.   The human mind is a very puzzling thing, an inpenetrable fortress but also an unguarded wasteland. To rule over anything in life, you have to learn ho...
