Chapter Five :

Investigating The Town /

After filling my water bottle with some ice water, I changed into a pastel green T shirt and bleached blue jean cutoffs. I put on my white high tops and set off for town. The walk only took about seven minutes, and the heat was tolerable since it wasn't high noon yet.

When I first set foot on the town road pavement, a horrid feeling filled my body. It was inhuman fear and terror and panic and at the same time an unexplainable emptiness, like a black hole. I walked slowly past houses and little stores, trying to shake off what I felt. I looked into some of the houses and could see people gathered around their televisions, with the exact same hollowness in their eyes as my parents'. I could hear and feel a warped hum coming from the houses, almost like some weird hypnosis.

I spent hours here, and now I was feeling hungry again, and the sun was starting to set. I still hadn't found any reason behind what was going on, but I still observed WHAT was happening. And it wasn't just about the people, either.

The buildings were now laced with strange vines, huge blue leafed trees were growing between houses and out of the concrete, street lights flashed undescribable colors and made a buzzing noise, the grass was almost spiny, and alien flowers with prickly leaves and stems sprouted out of the pavement.

Worst of all, the sky which had been normal since just this morning was now a deep rose shade, swirling with purple and orange. A huge glowing moon hung in the sky, much different from the moon I remembered. I had this dystopian feeling in my stomach when I looked up at it.

I started home, humming something other than what I was hearing from all the stupid TV screens in people's houses. Little yellow flowers grew on each side of the dirt path, glowing and sparkling. I was so sick of seeing what my familiar world was turning into. I kicked up the flowers as I walked.

When I got home, the sun was completely out of sight and four moons replaced it, their alien coloration illuminating my almost pitch black surroundings. A floral and earthy smell drifted from all around, and I was becoming really tired.

In my house, I quickly made some oatmeal and ate it while sitting on the floor in the hallway. I brushed my teeth and went to my room, I didn't bother changing into pajamas. I closed my window and laid on my bed, as my eyelids grew heavier and heavier...

Chapter One  : Meet Lavender  / I live in a huge, old Victorian house outside of a small town in Idaho. A lot of other kids have told me that my home is ugly and creepy, and I say otherwise. Its a two story house, containing 3 bedrooms, the living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a mostly empty basement. None of the latter is what makes me love my house.  Its the beautiful fragrant dark brown pine wood that makes up the walls, the gray cold stone floor in the basement, the smooth oak wood flooring on the top two levels, the sharply shaped triangular roofs, the wraparound porch with chairs and potted plants that flower and vine around the railings, and lastly, the big clear glass windows that let me see the outside world. But that's just why I love my HOUSE.  The absolute best part is the seemingly endless forest in my backyard. Ever since I could walk and talk and comprehend things, I was in that forest - walking, running, adventuring, exploring, looking ...
Chapter Thirty Three  :   Betrayal  /  My breathing was slow and delayed; I was underwater, sucking gallons and gallons of water into my lungs. " Lavender, " Came my mother's gentle voice, comforting like a pillow.  " Lavender, " Was my father's voice, strong and reassuring like an oak tree.  " Lavender. " Orpheus's soft voice, waking me up. I opened my eyes, everything was blurry for a few seconds. I wasn't underwater, but laying sideways on the concrete in the town. Ropes bound my hands and feet. Orpheus was chained to the ground beside me, twitching nervously. I couldn't stand looking into his sorrowful gleaming blue eyes anymore, so I turned my face skywards.  The enormous carmine moon shone down upon everything, casting a bloody glow on it all. Most of the dark clouds had cleared by now, and countless planets and stars of every hue were visible in the sky.  Glancing around, the city seemed dead. The strange, gorgeous plants withere...
Chapter Eleven  :  The City That Fell /  Hundreds of cows were treading down the road that ran in front of my house. I wondered how this could get any weirder, but then I saw that they were wearing clothes, shoes, hats, etc. I rolled my eyes. "Keep rolling your eyes, maybe you'll find a brain back there," A cow in a glittery yellow blouse said as she passed by me. It made me uncomfortable that the cows had human eyes and teeth. When most of them had run past,I stopped the few at the end of the herd. "What's going on?" I asked them. "Why the rush?"  The biggest of them, wearing a tan checkered flannel and brown cowboy hat, walked up to me. "Our town's fallin' apart," He stated in a deep southern accent. The other cows nodded in agreement. He pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his shirt pocket, lit one, and took a long drag. "What's your town called?" I questioned. "Priest River," He told me, blowing out a g...
