Chapter Eight :

Explanation

"Prophecy?" I questioned. "What prophecy?"

Dolion drew a small tattered book from its pocket, handing it to me. I read a bit from the first paragraph :

"After hundreds of lifetimes, the world you know will fall. Otherworld realms will merge with the human realm, impossible things will happen, and no one will be alive enough to see it all. No one but one, a human named Lavender. All the otherworld realms will know her instantly by her face. Very few will come to help her save the human world; most WILL deceive her. If the wrong side succeeds, earth will fall forever, into a deep sleep, never to be awoken."

"What!?" I yelled. "Why didn't I, or anyone else, have this warning?"

"Because your world never possessed this book," Dolion stated. "Someone also kept it from a few of the otherworld realms, so they weren't prepared either."

"You know what, it doesn't really matter anyway. Even if my world had this book, they wouldn't have believed it. Just look at all the other beliefs no one cares about. What does matter is what I'm going to do now. Are you going to help me or not?"

A small smile flickered across Dolion's pale lips. "Of course," it said, putting the book back into its dress pocket.

We walked back through the woods, talking the whole way. Dolion's voice was soft and sweet, making me even more tired. The sky was getting brighter, a citrine sun rising from the west.

When we got home,  I pulled my jacket off and threw the flashlight on the table. "What's this?" Dolion asked, and I was about to explain about my parents but then I saw it was looking at the shattered bowl and fruit slices on the floor. "Doesn't matter," I mumbled sleepily and started up the stairs to my room. "Keep watch, would you?" I asked. It nodded its head.

My alarm clock read 8:56 A.M.. I fell asleep instantly.

I woke at 1 P.M., and as I got out of my bed I still felt drowsy. I went down the stairs to find Dolion sitting against the wall in the living room, with its eyes closed, apparently resting. As I made breakfast I noticed that the mess from a couple days ago was now cleaned up. Turning to sit at the table, Dolion stood in front of me. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?" I hollered. "You could have scared me to death!" Expressionless, it took a step back. "Sorry. But while you were asleep, I-"

"I know. You cleaned up the mess I made. Thank you." I interrupted, sitting down at the table. It nodded in reply. "Are you hungry?" I asked. It shook its head. "Okay," I said, eating my breakfast.

After I ate and then took a shower ( I only felt okay to do so because I had Dolion to guard the house ), I went outside to look for more details, or answers. Dolion followed close behind me, its big feathery wings spread out in the summer breeze. We went through the town again, then I had an idea. "Can't you fly us to another town? I know there's a bigger city nearby that we can search."

Dolion looked at the ground, biting on its bottom lip. For the first time, it looked nervous. "I... Can't fly.
