Chapter Six

Three In The Morning /

I was awoken by some awful noise, a cross between screaming and... Growling, like I'd imagined a monster would sound. The glowing numbers on my alarm clock said 3:00 A.M.. I slowly got up out of my bed, and stepped as quietly as possible across my room, to the window. Now there were only two moons in the sky, both flooding a blood-like gleam over everything. All I could see were the dark blue treetops swaying, reddish pink clouds floating in the sky, and the long grass stirring.

The noise was now softly fading, and a low bass-like noise replaced it. I could feel vibrations coming from the ground; it even affected the house. I wandered downstairs and then outside, confused. I had no idea what was going in general, much less about what was going on right now. Then I heard it again - the scream-growling. And whatever it was, was getting closer.

I ran and hid in the cluster of bushes that grew in front of the deck, waiting. My breath caught in my throat, and as I drew in more air I had to remind myself that I needed to keep quiet. The rocks underneath me were very uncomfortable, but I wrapped my arms around my knees and stayed put. The noise was so close now, whatever it was had to be right in my front yard.

I peered carefully through the leaves of the bushes and my eyes hurt because of what I saw.

A creature at least ten feet tall stood in front of the path leading to my house. It was clothed in black feathers, with skinny and abnormally long limbs, a long dragon-like face, fangs so big that it couldn't fully close its mouth, and eyes that glistened blue. Two black horns sprouted from its head. On its wrists and ankles were shackles, and small lengths of broken chains. Around its neck hung a thick chain necklace, with a sign on it reading "Orpheus." As it turned to look up at the sky, I saw mangled wings attached to its shoulders and back. From its mouth came the horrible noise.

But now that it was so much closer to me, it wasn't just screaming and growling. I could hear crying and pain in the chaos coming from its vocal cords. As I sat there, terrified, I couldn't decide what to do.

After it had gazed at the sky long enough, it turned back to my house and treaded up the path. In a few seconds, its had reached my porch, right above where I was hiding. It wasn't making the awful noise anymore, and instead it was humming something... Something beautiful, not like what spilled from the TV screens, but real music. And surprisingly, its humming was soft and gentle.

It reached out with long bony fingers to open the front door, and then it swiftly stepped inside. It couldn't have been in there for more than fifteen minutes, and I waited silently the entire time until it wandered back outside. It faltered as it walked back down the path and away from my house, leaving behind a few black feathers that were swept up in the breeze.

  1. I was so excited to see that Chapter 6 was written and I couldn't wait to read the continuation of your story. I loved the descriptions of what you wrote as usual. You make them come alive in your writing. It left me wanting to know more. I felt scared as Lavender was hiding in the bushes wondering the whole time what was making the screaming - growling sounds, causing such vibration that you could even feel coming from the ground and then the crying and pain. I especially noticed the details of the broken chains and shackles on Orpheus' wrists and ankles. Made me wonder what it had gone through previously and whether the mangled wings were from breaking free or if Orpheus had been hurt by someone or something.
This is such a great story. I'm so glad that you wrote more and I look forward to reading more when you get time to write. I'm so proud of you!

Chapter One  : Meet Lavender  / I live in a huge, old Victorian house outside of a small town in Idaho. A lot of other kids have told me that my home is ugly and creepy, and I say otherwise. Its a two story house, containing 3 bedrooms, the living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a mostly empty basement. None of the latter is what makes me love my house.  Its the beautiful fragrant dark brown pine wood that makes up the walls, the gray cold stone floor in the basement, the smooth oak wood flooring on the top two levels, the sharply shaped triangular roofs, the wraparound porch with chairs and potted plants that flower and vine around the railings, and lastly, the big clear glass windows that let me see the outside world. But that's just why I love my HOUSE.  The absolute best part is the seemingly endless forest in my backyard. Ever since I could walk and talk and comprehend things, I was in that forest - walking, running, adventuring, exploring, looking ...
Chapter Thirty Three  :   Betrayal  /  My breathing was slow and delayed; I was underwater, sucking gallons and gallons of water into my lungs. " Lavender, " Came my mother's gentle voice, comforting like a pillow.  " Lavender, " Was my father's voice, strong and reassuring like an oak tree.  " Lavender. " Orpheus's soft voice, waking me up. I opened my eyes, everything was blurry for a few seconds. I wasn't underwater, but laying sideways on the concrete in the town. Ropes bound my hands and feet. Orpheus was chained to the ground beside me, twitching nervously. I couldn't stand looking into his sorrowful gleaming blue eyes anymore, so I turned my face skywards.  The enormous carmine moon shone down upon everything, casting a bloody glow on it all. Most of the dark clouds had cleared by now, and countless planets and stars of every hue were visible in the sky.  Glancing around, the city seemed dead. The strange, gorgeous plants withere...
Chapter Eleven  :  The City That Fell /  Hundreds of cows were treading down the road that ran in front of my house. I wondered how this could get any weirder, but then I saw that they were wearing clothes, shoes, hats, etc. I rolled my eyes. "Keep rolling your eyes, maybe you'll find a brain back there," A cow in a glittery yellow blouse said as she passed by me. It made me uncomfortable that the cows had human eyes and teeth. When most of them had run past,I stopped the few at the end of the herd. "What's going on?" I asked them. "Why the rush?"  The biggest of them, wearing a tan checkered flannel and brown cowboy hat, walked up to me. "Our town's fallin' apart," He stated in a deep southern accent. The other cows nodded in agreement. He pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his shirt pocket, lit one, and took a long drag. "What's your town called?" I questioned. "Priest River," He told me, blowing out a g...
