Chapter Fifteen

Escaping The Corrupt /

"They're here," Mirai fearfully whispered. "The Corrupt."

All the creatures had hungry, enraged, inhuman smiles on their faces. They surrounded us; there was no way out. "This is too easy," The wolf snarled. "Three freaks with one stone."

"So much for saving the world, huh, Lavender?" Taunted the lizard.

They all inched closer, their large mouths crowded with sharp teeth. Dolion stepped in front of me and Mirai. The wolf leapt at it. "Run!" Yelled Dolion.

Both Mirai and I dashed out of the tent, the rest of the creatures at our heels. After running for about two minutes, I yelled to Mirai, "I can't run for much longer." "Then we won't run," She replied breathlessly. "We'll hide. Follow me." We ran a bit farther, zigzagging through the endless trees. She slid under bushes and fallen tree trunks, jumped over rocks, and then she disappeared over a hill. I jumped from the hill and continued running, but she reached out and snatched me, throwing us into a veiled hollow. We peered out in fear.

It was only a few seconds before the monsters bolted from the hill, right above us, making everything shake. They bounded past where we hid, snapping and growling.

But one stayed behind, the leopard with goat horns. It put its nose to the ground, sniffing. It went in circles a few times, then closer and closer to where me and Mirai hid. We covered our mouths so it couldn't hear our breathing. It was just outside the hollow, looking right at us with its teeth bared as it hummed a distorted tune.

A huge tree branch fell and crashed on top of the leopard. We winced at the smashing noise the impact made. It lay completely still underneath the branch. We didn't come out of hiding until we were sure it was either fully unconscious or deceased.

Stepping out from the hollow, Mirai frowned. "Enormous tree branches don't just fall like that," She stated. Some black feathers floated through the breeze, swirling around the fallen branch and then into the trees. "No," I agreed. "They don't. Let's get out of here."

Chapter One  : Meet Lavender  / I live in a huge, old Victorian house outside of a small town in Idaho. A lot of other kids have told me that my home is ugly and creepy, and I say otherwise. Its a two story house, containing 3 bedrooms, the living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a mostly empty basement. None of the latter is what makes me love my house.  Its the beautiful fragrant dark brown pine wood that makes up the walls, the gray cold stone floor in the basement, the smooth oak wood flooring on the top two levels, the sharply shaped triangular roofs, the wraparound porch with chairs and potted plants that flower and vine around the railings, and lastly, the big clear glass windows that let me see the outside world. But that's just why I love my HOUSE.  The absolute best part is the seemingly endless forest in my backyard. Ever since I could walk and talk and comprehend things, I was in that forest - walking, running, adventuring, exploring, looking ...
Chapter Thirty Three  :   Betrayal  /  My breathing was slow and delayed; I was underwater, sucking gallons and gallons of water into my lungs. " Lavender, " Came my mother's gentle voice, comforting like a pillow.  " Lavender, " Was my father's voice, strong and reassuring like an oak tree.  " Lavender. " Orpheus's soft voice, waking me up. I opened my eyes, everything was blurry for a few seconds. I wasn't underwater, but laying sideways on the concrete in the town. Ropes bound my hands and feet. Orpheus was chained to the ground beside me, twitching nervously. I couldn't stand looking into his sorrowful gleaming blue eyes anymore, so I turned my face skywards.  The enormous carmine moon shone down upon everything, casting a bloody glow on it all. Most of the dark clouds had cleared by now, and countless planets and stars of every hue were visible in the sky.  Glancing around, the city seemed dead. The strange, gorgeous plants withere...
Chapter Eleven  :  The City That Fell /  Hundreds of cows were treading down the road that ran in front of my house. I wondered how this could get any weirder, but then I saw that they were wearing clothes, shoes, hats, etc. I rolled my eyes. "Keep rolling your eyes, maybe you'll find a brain back there," A cow in a glittery yellow blouse said as she passed by me. It made me uncomfortable that the cows had human eyes and teeth. When most of them had run past,I stopped the few at the end of the herd. "What's going on?" I asked them. "Why the rush?"  The biggest of them, wearing a tan checkered flannel and brown cowboy hat, walked up to me. "Our town's fallin' apart," He stated in a deep southern accent. The other cows nodded in agreement. He pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his shirt pocket, lit one, and took a long drag. "What's your town called?" I questioned. "Priest River," He told me, blowing out a g...
